The Full Story

About

Cynthia Fortlage is a speaker, author, and leadership thinker whose work explores the intersection of power, dignity, and belonging in modern leadership.

Over more than twenty-five years, her career has moved across corporate leadership, the national women’s movement, and international LGBTQ+ advocacy. These experiences have shaped a perspective that bridges business leadership with the realities of social change.

Today Cynthia works with leaders and organisations navigating complexity, helping them build cultures where people can contribute fully and where leadership is grounded in responsibility as well as results.

Through speaking, writing, and mentoring, she invites leaders to examine the assumptions that shape their decisions and the environments they create.

A Leadership Journey Across Sectors

Cynthia’s leadership journey spans corporate environments, movement leadership, and international advocacy.

She has worked with more than 500 organisations across 30 countries, advising leaders on culture, leadership, and the practical realities of inclusion.

Her experience includes leadership roles within the national women’s movement, as well as board-level work supporting global LGBTQ+ human rights organisations.

These diverse environments have given Cynthia a unique perspective on how power operates inside organisations and how leaders can navigate difference without losing sight of dignity.

What Cynthia’s Work Explores

At the centre of Cynthia’s work is a simple but demanding question: what does responsible leadership look like in a complicated world?

Her writing and speaking explore themes such as:

• leadership and responsibility
• power, privilege, and dignity
• psychological safety in practice
• gender and leadership
• navigating difference without losing humanity

She is also the creator of Acceptance without Understanding™, a leadership philosophy that invites people to hold space for difference without requiring agreement.

These ideas form the foundation of her work with leaders, organisations, and audiences around the world.

She has served on the board of Outright International, a global organisation advancing LGBTQ+ human rights, and has worked with international networks connected to the United Nations ecosystem.

Her work continues through board and advisory roles that connect leadership development with broader conversations about equality, dignity, and social responsibility.

These experiences continue to inform her writing, speaking, and leadership philosophy.
