In a time when some organisations are retreating from their diversity initiatives due to pressure from right-wing activists, the message of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games couldn’t be more vital. These Games have brought a sharp contrast into focus, highlighting the importance of inclusion and diversity when we need it most.
Andrew Parsons, President of the International Paralympic Committee, reminded us all that the Paralympic Games are “a platform for changing the way the world views disability.” He emphasised that “diversity is a strength, and inclusion is the only way forward.” His words resonate deeply with my work in advocating for acceptance without the need for understanding.
The Paralympic movement serves as a powerful reminder that inclusion isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a necessity. As we face growing resistance to diversity initiatives, we must remember that these values are worth fighting for. The spirit of the Paralympic Games shows us what we stand to lose if we falter, and more importantly, what we can achieve when we stand firm.
Let’s continue to push for a world where diversity is celebrated, and inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. Together, we can ensure that everyone has a place where they belong, no matter their abilities or identities.
